When I first came to Stempia, I didn’t know any Java. I had only messed around with a little C# for fun while working with robots, so I was pretty much starting from zero. At Stempia, I learned Java, got into competitive programming, and started to take computer science a lot more seriously. I also had the chance to become president of Voice of Calling, a student-led global nonprofit connected to Stempia. Through that, I learned that coding wasn’t just about solving problems on a computer. It could actually be used to help people, build a community, and even make an impact beyond myself. Now I’m about to graduate from MIT with a degree in Computer Science, and I’ll be working at Suno as a software engineer. Looking back, it’s pretty clear that Stempia played a big role in getting me here. Outside of CS, music has also been a big part of my life. I’ve played in jazz combos at school, started my own band, and spent a lot of time playing electric guitar. In some ways, coding and music have always felt connected to me. Both are creative, both take a lot of practice, and both are way more fun when you get to do them with other people. Stempia was never just a place where I learned to code. It was where I met a lot of my closest friends, mentors, and people who really felt like family. I’m really grateful for everything I experienced there, and honestly, I miss everyone a lot. Stempia will always be a special part of my life.

I first came to Stempia as a freshman with just a little Python experience from YouTube. I didn’t really know much about programming yet, but Stempia was where I started to actually learn computer science in a serious way. At Stempia, I took Java and ACSL theory classes and started competing in ACSL. I competed for two years, made it to the international finals both times, and earned a silver medal in my junior year. Stempia also helped push me to try other competitions like HSPC Code Mines, HPE CodeWars, and Lockheed Martin CodeQuest. One of the biggest parts of Stempia for me was that it wasn’t only about taking classes. Through Stempia, I got involved with Voice of Calling and worked on projects that felt more meaningful than just coding for practice. I helped with projects like For the Next, which was recognized in the Congressional App Challenge, as well as Future of Tanzania and Rwanda, Voice of Peace, and ongoing work with ACTS.Africa. Those experiences helped me see that programming and engineering could actually be used to help real people and real communities. This fall, I’ll be starting at MIT as a freshman. I’m interested in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering, and I’m hoping to explore UROP opportunities related to autonomous systems and national defense. In the long run, I hope to commission into the Air Force through ROTC and become a developmental engineer. Looking back, Stempia was a really important part of my high school years. It gave me the foundation to start programming seriously, helped me get into competitions, and connected me to projects and people that shaped what I want to do in the future. I’m really thankful for everything I learned and experienced there.

If I had to list the greatest influences on my high school journey, Stempia Computer Institute would be at the top. I joined Stempia in eighth grade with little knowledge of computer programming. Since then, I have grown tremendously, not only as a computer programmer but also as a member of the global community.
Over the years, I have mastered Java and gone on to compete and win in international competitions, from the American Computer Science League to the Lockheed Martin CodeQuest competition. Last summer, with Stempia’s guidance, I earned the Java SE 8 Oracle Associate certification, an industry-recognized proof of coding ability. Yet Stempia has always been more than a classroom. It is also a community of computer science students and alumni. Through my classes, I have met and befriended students living across the United States, sharing laughter and inside jokes. My teachers have been constant sources of encouragement and wisdom, endlessly supporting me not only in computer science but also in my college application journey.

Stempia Computer Institute played a big part in my journey in computer science. Through their programs and courses, I was able to compete in coding competitions including USACO, ACSL, CodeQuest, and HSPC, each of which pushed me to grow as a programmer. Stempia opened doors to a variety of extracurricular opportunities that strengthened my college application and helped me stand out during the admissions process. The experiences I gained here gave me something meaningful to bring to the table when applying to college. Beyond admissions, the material covered in Stempia's courses gave me a head start in my college coursework. Concepts that can be challenging to grasp for the first time were already familiar to me, making it easier to keep up and excel. Studying computer science with my peers at Stempia was a foundational part of my growth, both academically and personally. More than just teaching coding, the classes also taught me discipline. Whether that meant preparing for competitions, or consistently working through challenging problem sets, I faced situations that required focus, patience, and commitment. I was able to carry those essential habits forward into the college admissions process, and even in my early years at college. Learning how to sit with difficult material, break it down methodically, and keep going even when progress felt slow were all fundamental lessons that helped me feel confident in the work I submitted. Academically, Stempia also gave me a "real" head start compared to any other computer science experience I had in high school. There were multiple times in college when I encountered data structures, algorithms, runtime analysis, and best coding practices, and realized they felt more familiar rather than intimidating. Because I had already wrestled with these initial concepts through projects and competitions, I was able to focus more on deepening my understanding in my classes instead of just trying to keep up. The project experiences I also gained gave me meaningful memories to talk about as stories of persistence, iteration, and growth in future interviews. In retrospect, what I really appreciate most is how Stempia has quietly built both competence and confidence. Many of my classes weren't just focused on learning how to code, but learning how to think critically. The challenges, late-night problem solving sessions, and moments of frustration all contributed to a stronger foundation that continues to support me today. Stempia Academy played a huge role in my journey as a competitive programmer. I first got interested in coding there through Scratch and Python, and over time, their structured training and constant support helped me grow far beyond what I imagined. With their guidance, I was able to reach Platinum in USACO and KOI, and eventually earn a Gold Medal at an ICPC regional. I started learning coding at Stempia in elementary school, and over 10 years later, I can clearly see how much it has influenced my skills and interests. Even without prior background, I was able to jump into the material right away, as Chuyeon teacher has a rare gift of being able to break down even the most complicated concepts into something understandable to anyone. Chuyeon teacher is incredibly patient and encouraging, and she shows this by dedicating her time and effort to all of her students. She always checks in, even outside of class time, and is willing to provide support whenever she can. To Chuyeon teacher, supporting students doesn’t mean just answering their questions. She is constantly looking for opportunities for her students to pursue outside the classroom, whether it be certifications, competitions, or volunteer opportunities. In this way, she is more than just a teacher, but our number one supporter: staying up late with us to prepare for competitions, tirelessly going over practice problems before the next day’s test, and offering words of strength. My experience at Stempia was a large part of why I chose to major in computer science in college. Of course, having early preparation was definitely helpful, but more importantly, I feel genuinely excited to pursue CS because these memories from being at Stempia have stuck with me: the thrill of solving a problem I had been stuck on for the past few hours… or even days, the nervous excitement of competing in contests, and the support that made this all possible.
